Care is Wealth
In Singapore, the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) aims to benefit employees by aiding any personal or work-related problems that may have an adverse impact on their job performance and emotional well-being.
Some of the benefits of the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) includes happier employees, increase in employee productivity, efficiency, morale, decrease in absenteeism and sick leave, and greater employee retention.
- For every dollar invested in an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), employers generally save anywhere from $5 to $16 (United States Department of Labor, What Works: Workplaces Without Drugs, p.17).
- When an EAP program is not available, supervisors are required to deal directly with employee problems which negatively impact supervisors’ productivity. Several studies reported that 90% of supervisors’ time is spent with 10% of their employees – a large percentage of who could be assisted by EAP through supervisory referrals.
- When depression is effectively treated, absenteeism is reduced 12 days per year. Wang (Journal of American Medical Association 2007)
6 Benefits of Workplace Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) Singapore
Lead to increase productivity at work
When employees are distracted by personal problems, they become less motivated and creative at work. They may also start to use more sick days in an effort to cope. Needless to say, these absences can have serious consequences.
In fact, the Society for Human Resource Management reports that companies lose 36.6% of their productivity due to employee absences.
However, statistics show that after an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is introduced, productivity increases. Studies also show that the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) reduces sick leave usage by 33%, lost time by 40%, and work-related accidents by 65%.
Lead to increased employee retention
A positive work environment is a key factor in retaining talented employees.
Did you know that a survey by the American Health Association found that 51% of employees stay at their job because of good relationships with coworkers?
An Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) helps keep employees productive, present, and happier while on the job.
Affordable for employers to implement
One of the major benefits of employee assistance programs is that they are surprisingly affordable, ranging from 42 to 60 dollars per employee per year. This is less than 1% of what the average employer pays annually for employee health insurance!
It’s important to keep communicating the availability of the program to keep it top of mind for employees. If you don’t, the likelihood that they will use it decreases significantly.
Increase workplace morale by showing care & concern
Employee morale is the outlook, satisfaction, attitude, and confidence that team members have at work. It’s a reflection of how healthy company culture is, how well employees are supported, and how engaged employees are. It reveals the workplace mood.
While employers can’t give employees positive morale, they are powerful contributors to employee morale.
Sometimes, employees experience low morale for reasons unrelated to company culture — i.e., personal hardships or difficulties at home — but these are usually isolated incidents and don’t reflect company morale as a whole.
Help businesses save money
According to Statistics Canada, mental health issues cost employers a staggering $20 billion per year and account for 75% of short-term disability claims in Canada. If you’re not addressing mental health in the workplace, it may cost you dearly.
The results from Statistics Canada is consistent with results from other countries as well.
Investing in an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) leads to reduced healthcare costs, lower medical insurance usage, fewer disability claims, and fewer absences.
Encourage a positive work environment
Stress-caused issues such as absenteeism, decreased performance, and health problems affect not only one person but the overall work force.
Additionally, if someone is experiencing a high level of stress, they may become more defensive, argumentative, and a less communicative at work.
An Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) can help a troubled employee by providing support as well as an outlet to discuss their issues. As a result, the employee experiences an improvement in stress-levels, which will positively affect co-workers.
